Application Process

The applications for the Curriculum and Instruction PhD will be reviewed as they are received and complete in the department. Applicants must submit specific items to the UW Graduate School and to the College of Education. Below is a listing of the items for each.

UW Graduate School:

A graduate school application form online (see links below). A $50 fee must accompany the form. A copy of the online application will be forwarded to the department.

Domestic Graduate School Application

International Graduate School Application

Graduate Review Exam (GRE) scores. A composite score of 1000 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the GRE is preferred. The GRE is not required for applicants who have earned a master’s degree from an accredited (Council on Higher Education or equivalent) institution.

Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities must be mailed directly from that Registrar to The Graduate School. If you have requested that transcripts be sent and believe that they should have been received by the University of Wyoming, please contact the Graduate School (307-766-2287) for verification.

International Students must submit to the Graduate School:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores. The Graduate School recommends a TOEFL composite of 525 and a section I score of 28 for admission. These scores correspond to electronic TOEFL's of 197 and 23, respectively.

Confidential Financial Statement. This form is not needed if you have been awarded a full graduate assistantship.

The College of Education:

  • Three letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should come from those who can speak to the applicant's teaching and scholarly abilities, and/or doctoral program goals.

  • A letter of application addressing research interests that overlap with faculty members in the College and identifying specific faculty the applicant seeks to work with. The letter should also make reference to the applicant's past teaching experiences and/or other school activities. In addition, the letter should also make reference to the applicant's master's degree, area of study, year completed, and accredited institution from which it was received; reasons for pursuing the Ph.D. and goals for graduate study; career goals; and experiences and skills that have lead the applicant to consider the Ph.D.
  • Current vitae (resume)
