Thinking and Doing Math and Science Through Hands-on Applications in Engineering (Summer 2006)

The University of Wyoming is offering workshops in July 2006 for elementary teachers and middle/high school teachers. Participants will spend two weeks on campus experiencing hands-on mathematics and science inspired by everyday challenges in the field of engineering.

University of Wyoming faculty will teach concentrated topics on campus this summer. They will also provide continued support through on-line forums and periodic school site visits during the year to teachers as they develop and implement their classroom activities. “The activities will be aligned with Wyoming Standards for mathematics education and integrated for vertical growth through the K-6 and 7-12 programs,” said Linda Hutchison, associate professor of mathematics education at UW.

Over the past twosummers, participants studied a variety of topics including GPS and mapping, codes and cryptography, electronics including circuits, binary logic and programming. Teachers developed units that incorporate some of the concepts, activities and materials for use in their own classrooms. These units are available on-line here.

The workshop will be held on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie from July 10 – 21, 2006. There is no charge for the workshop; a stipend of $1000 will be paid to participants. Lodging and meals will be available at the University and will be included. 2 hours of Graduate Credit will be offered as well as PTSB credit.

Teachers must apply to participate in the program. Applications will be accepted until the workshop is full. There are 24 slots in Section A: K-6 and 24 slots in Section B: 6-12 (6 th grade teachers may decide for themselves which section they would prefer).
