Coal Bearing Formations

A Formation is a name given to a layer of rock that has consistent characteristics, was deposited within a relatively short period of time, and covers a significant area. The Fort Union Formation, a 2,000' thick layer of shale, sandstone, and coal in NE Wyoming, was deposited by rivers, lakes, and swamps over a period of 14 million years during the Paleocene Period.
