SMTC Graduate Programs


 

The Science and Mathematics Teaching Center (SMTC) is governed jointly by the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences. The SMTC offers two graduate degree programs with multiple degree concentrations, certification options, and endorsement options.

 

  • Master of Science in Natural Science (MSNS)
    • MSNS Middle Level Science (MSC) - Standards based masters degree program that leads to "Highly Qualified Teacher" status in Middle Level Science. The program is designed for elementary, middle, and general science teachers
    • MSNS Middle Level Math (MMA) - Standards based masters degree program that leads to "Highly Qualified Teacher" status in Middle Level Mathematics. The program is designed for elementary, middle, and general math teachers
    • MSNS Natural Science Edudcation (NED)- For students interested in environmental and natural science education in informal science settings. Students in this program must complete one year at the Teton Science School prior to attending the Natural Science program.
  • Master of Science in Teaching (MST) - Developed for secondary mathematics and science teachers.

The MSNS Middle Level programs have a teaching endorsement option, while the MSNS Natural Science Education has a secondary biology teaching certification option. A Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with areas of specialization in science and mathematics is also available through the College of Education.

Admission

In addition to the minimum requirements set forth by the University of Wyoming Graduate School, The SMTC requires:

  • A valid teaching certificate or taking courses leading to certification in conjunction with the master's program.  This requirement is waived for MSNS- Natural Science Education students.
  • 1 year of teaching experience
  • A composite score of 900 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE general test OR a score of 15 out of 20 on the SMTC GRE Portfolio Alternative.
  • Completion of SMTC Application:  MSNS MSC (Science),  MSNS-MMA (Math),  MSNS-NED (Natural Science Education) or MST
  • SMTC Writing Sample:  MSNS- MSC,  MSNS- MMAMSNS- NED MST
  • Current Resume
  • Official Transcripts of all post-secondary academic work, credit or non-credit.  Photocopies are NOT acceptable (please do not request a UW transcript)
  • Three letters of recommendation provided by individuals knowledgeable about your preparation and/or qualifications for our graduate degree program.
  • Letter of Support from School Official
  • The MSNS- NED requires application and acceptance into the Teton Science School Professional Residency in Environmental Education (PREE) program prior to the University of Wyoming Graduate School.
