Comments Welcome for NGA Center and CCSSO draft Standards

Printable Article Email this Article

The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today released the first official public draft of the college- and career-readiness standards in English-language arts and mathematics as part of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, a process being led by governors and chief state school officers in 51 states and territories. These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing, academic college courses and in workforce training programs.

Since Wyoming is one of the states that that has agreed to look at these standards which are now available for public viewing and comment, I believe that every teacher in the state should have the opportunity to do so if they so wish.

I am not advocating these standards, but as they are on the national stage, they are something we all need to become familiar with. With that in mind, and realizing the comment period only lasts until October 21, 2009, I would appreciate it if you would inform your teachers of the following website where they can view the standards and make comments: www.corestandards.org .
